Four Reasons Why College WILL Change Your Life

  • Oct 8, 2015
  • 3 min read

Since the day I was born I have always been told that I will get a college education. It’s a fact I can't deny. But have you ever sat down and considered the reasons why having a college degree is so crucial? Yeah, me either… until now. Here are my top four reasons, counting down:

#4: You meet some of the coolest people.

College is a melting pot of people coming from all over the nation, and world, in one place. You have the opportunity to make connections and lifetime friendships from someone who isn’t from your neck of the woods.

#3: You’re forced to become an adult and make your own decisions.

Going to college makes us leave home as well as teaches us responsibility. For some of us, our parents have done our dishes and laundry for as long as we can remember. I know mine did. College opens our eyes to what it’s like to be an actual adult. We never have to check in and there’s no curfew. They can’t hold our hand through the stress of finals week and they definitely can’t call to make a doctor’s appointment for us. College is the time to make mistakes and learn from them.

#2: Some places/people in the world aren’t fortunate enough to get a degree.

There are places in the world, including the United States, where people cannot afford to attend college. If you have the opportunity to extend your education, despite the student loans after you graduate, you are one of the lucky ones. Fortunately, I was given a college fund after a family friend passed away when I was about 6-years-old. We tend to take for granted the opportunities that we are given. Getting your degree is not one of those things. Education is something that no one can take away from you. At the end of the day, we may not be the richest people in the world but we will be part of a small percentage that earned our degree and extended our education so we could better our futures.

#1: New doors are opened.

Madison, Wisconsin

Going to college not only means receiving a piece of paper with our names on it, it also means a plethora of doors will be waiting for us to open. There are internships that can lead to landing our dream job or giving us connections that can get us in the right direction of yur dream job. I interned with the Madison Mallards this summer and it has opened more doors than I could have ever imagined. The opportunity to study abroad in almost any country our hearts desire can be at our fingertips. Most of us know that there are once in a lifetime opportunities and if we miss them we may never get them back again. College is kind of a loophole for that. Multiple life changing opportunities can be thrown our way. All we have to do is take them.

A college degree means something different for everyone because everyone’s story is a little different. If there’s any advice I can give you it would be to live it up and don’t let the moments pass by. You always hear everyone say that “high school will be the time of your life.” Yeah, that’s a big, fat lie. College, hands down, will be the time of your life. Embrace it.
