Why you belong in Public Relations.

When I first started my college career I was confident that I wanted to be a physical therapist because of my love for sports. It took one glance at the degree requirements and basically bolted out the door. It wasn’t until my sophomore year that I finally knew where I saw myself in 10 years. It just so happens that public relations was my calling.

#4: The connections I make last a lifetime.

In the PR world, you are forced to be a “people-person”. You have to be comfortable to get up and speak in front of a group of people and really keep their attention. For example, I spent my summer as marketing and ticket sales intern for a collegiate baseball team in Madison, Wisconsin. I still communicate with my supervisor, general manager, other interns, season ticket holders, and families that attend some of the camps we put on. Knowing that I can call my supervisor at any time, for anything I need in my career or personal life is something that not every one is lucky enough to have in their back pocket.

#3: I was forced to enjoy public speaking.

I have always been the type of person who would rather give a presentation than take a test but I never was able to say I liked it. It wasn’t until I started my degree that I truly learned to love what I was presenting. The moment I found my passion, the public speaking part became a passion as well.

#2: I would have never started blogging.

When I was younger, I loved to write but as I got older I wrote less and less. It wasn’t until I left for Wisconsin that I thought it would be a good idea to start blogging so my family could know what I was up to when I couldn’t call. Blogging in Wisconsin reminded me how much I loved writing, about anything. Public Relations lets me do what I loved as a kid and teenage, but now at the age of 22.

#1: I found my passion.

When you find what you are passionate school becomes actually worth it. You enjoy going to classes, you enjoy your professors and the other people in your major. I started noticing that I was even waking up happier and easier. I began to hate missing classes and didn’t like when classes were cancelled. Weird, I know. Finding your passion is what will drive you in life, so don’t give up.

Public Relations changed my life. I was a student-athlete before and focused only on the athlete part. It wasn’t until I realized that I wasn’t going to pay the bills by being an professional athlete and really started focusing on school that I could love something as much as I loved softball.
